Epsilon-Aminoeaproic Acid for Bleeding After Open-Heart Surgery

Abstract
The effect of epsilon-aminocaproic acid (EACA) in reducing bleeding after cardiopulmonary bypass was studied fin 68 patients who underwent open-heart operations for the repair of intracardiac lesions.
Forty-four patients received EACA prior to the onset of bypass and 24 received EACA after operations. Bleeding after operation in patients treated prior to the onset of bypass was substantially less than in those who was treated after operation- (1a 09 ml/kg/hour to 0.54 ml/kg/hr). The results of the study indicate that EACA may be more effective in reducing bleeding after open heart surgery when administered before the beginning of cardiopulmonary bypass.
